3D Art & Graphic Design Tools

The following are 3D art and design resources that are free, open-source, or otherwise fairly inexpensive.

3D Modeling, Sculpting, and Texturing

Blender3D: Blender is an open source (free) 3D creation suite. Here are some of the things you can do with Blender: Modeling, sculpting, animation and rigging, Grease Pencil (2D design and animation), rendering, simulation, video editing, scripting, visual effects (VFX).

Nomad Sculpt: A mobile application for digital sculpting and painting. Most of the tools and interface is similar to Blender’s sculpting tools. The cool thing is that it is a mobile app that works great on a tablet.

Substance Painter: The only software on this list that isn’t free, but well worth the investment if you create 3D model textures and materials.

Image Editing/Illustration

GIMP: Open source image editor similar to Adobe Photoshop.

Inkscape: Open source vector illustration software similar to Adobe Illustrator.

Digital Art

ArtRage: Digital painting and drawing. From their website: “The ultimate in realistic painting tools, textures, and color blending.”

Krita: Open source (free) painting program.

Design Graphics

Canva: Browser-based design software. Create images (still or animated) and light video editing. Canva is free to use. There is also a Pro (paid) version as well.
