Puppy in Traffic: Emergent Gameplay
Puppy in Traffic: Emergent Gameplay–Grand Theft Auto V
July 23, 2016
I want to preface this post with a disclaimer: I in no way condone playing with animals in traffic. This is just an example of emergent gameplay. Yes it is violent, but such is the nature of this particular game. But this is imaginary and in no way is meant to depict actual events, persons, or animals living or dead 🙂
This week’s ds106 assignment: make a video of yourself doing your favorite hobby for 30 seconds to 1 minutes. I decided to record some Grand Theft Auto V gameply. My first console was an Atari 2600. I was hooked from then on and as I have gotten older I’ve looked at them much more critically. Games are my entertainment, much like books. There is something to be said about interacting directly with a piece of fiction.
It took me a bit to gather a couple of clips that weren’t too dull. Open-world games facilitate emergent gameplay meaning unexpected events can occur. You are able to encourage things to happen as I did in the clip below. It could have taken a while to create a decent clip if I didn’t exploit the “rules” of the gameworld to my advantage. I threw the ball in traffic to test the rules of the game to answer my question: can the dog get run over? I exported the clips from the Playstation to Movie Maker and did some quick edits before I uploaded the video to YouTube.
